using iphone in our exchange server world
May 22 2007, 6:32 PM EDT
We currently are using exchange server and blackberry enterprise server. I use a mac on our corp network and run MS Entourage for my address book, email, calendar etc. Currently, my email gets pushed to entourage on my powerbook and my blackberry. How will this work with the iphone? 5  out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

I don't beleive it will work. I think you will need to use a IMAP or POP3 client that should be on the iphone. It will not be pushed you will have to be check at a certain inerval or on dempand. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Aren't there security concerns with using IMAP or POP3 as opposed to something like BES? 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Yea, apple should really considder adding compatability with exchange direct push if they want to get customers who can actually aford the $600 phone. and for that price, it should do much more than it actually does. you've done it again apple. YOU SUCK 0  out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

No one can answer this until the iPhone ships on the 29th. The most detail available so far is that the iPhone will work with POP3 or IMAP servers, but we still don't know if this means it will work with *secure* POP3 or *secure* IMAP (which use SSL to encrypt data). Entourage doesn't use POP3 or IMAP; it connects to Outlook Web Access to retrieve mail and calendar information. Looking forward to answers on the 29th... -=osric=- 1  out of 1 found this valuable. You actually do get calendaring if you use Outlook on the PC or iCal or Entourage on the Mac -- but you have to sync locally through your computer using iTunes just like you do to update music on your iPod. Rather lame way to update your calendar; BlackBerry's nearly instant over-the-air calendar updates using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) have spoiled me. See the "Get Ready for iPhone" page at Apple for more: http://www.apple.com/iphone/easysetup/getready.html -=osric=-

You can get your email from your Exchange server if POP3 or IMAP is enabled on the server. The MAPI protocol that Outlook uses to talk to Exchange is proprietary, as is the BlackBerry sync. Apple is sticking to open standards with the iPhone. If you want something that works with Exchange, buy a Windows Mobile device. Those work great with Exchange since they run Windows. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?
